Will my private health insurance cover osteopathy?

What to check on your policy before booking osteopathy, what to ask your insurer, and how receipts and claims generally work.

Many people ask whether their private health insurance or health cash plan will pay for osteopathy. Whether it does depends entirely on your insurer and your policy, so the safest approach is to check before you book. This page covers what to look for.

Policies differ

Some policies include osteopathy as part of their outpatient or therapies cover, some only cover it in particular circumstances, and some do not cover it at all. Some require a GP or consultant referral, some ask you to use practitioners registered with them, and many have a limit on how much you can claim or how many sessions are covered. Health cash plans through an employer often work differently again, and may reimburse part of the fee on receipt.

What to ask your insurer

  • Is osteopathy covered under my policy, and is there a limit on sessions or cost?
  • Do I need a referral from my GP or a consultant before I book?
  • Do I need pre-authorisation, and does the practitioner need to be registered with you?
  • Do you pay the practice directly, or do I pay and claim back?
  • What do I need to submit for a claim, such as an itemised receipt?

Receipts and claims

A receipt can be provided after your appointment for you to submit to your insurer. Please check your policy's requirements before booking, as arrangements vary between insurers and between policies.

Check your osteopath is registered

Insurers generally expect treatment from a qualified, regulated practitioner. All osteopaths practising in the UK must be on the General Osteopathic Council register, and you can check this online.

If you have a question that is not answered here, or you would like your symptoms assessed, you are welcome to get in touch or book an appointment.
